A3R Civils rebuild

This was meant to start right behind the de-construction.

The Longannet factor kicked in and it was well into December 2010 before the contract was awarded and the rebuild preparation work started.

A3R - Absorver #3 Restoration

Firstly the burnt out absorber had to be made safe before it could be demolished - or to use the PC term de-constructed.

This process took from late December 2009 until the end of August 2010.

It came in on time and on budget. A first for the FGD Project.

Absorber #3 Fire

In March 2009 just about at the end of the project they had a fire in absorber #3.
23rd March 2009 Unit #3 Absorber fire

It was destroyed as was the internals, the concrete shell, the Gas Gas Heater exchanger on top, and project morale went right out the window.

How do you backfill a GRP pipe?

There are two ways of doing it.
The right way, or the way it has been done here.
September 2009 February 2010 was painful to watch the guys digging out the backfilled sections and then watching it being backfilled correctly.
This time it was compacted tested and they included a thrust block, basic stuff, "lessons learned" etc.

FGD Project

Working on the FGD Project at Scottish Power Longannet.

Flue Gas Desulphurisation Project.

Take cooling water out of the flume, pump it through 800 m of 2.8 m dia. GRP pipe put it in through an absorber mix it with the flue gass from the units. This has  a chemical reaction that take the sulphate out of the flue gas.

The gas then goes back out and up the chimney, the sea water is returned to the flume in 1.8 m dia. GRP pipes where air is added in aeration beds which turns the sulphate into sulphur in sea water.
